Both are manually operated switches controlled by a rotary handle. The difference is mainly in construction and switching logic; cam switches use cam-operated contact stacks for multi-position duties such as changeover, while rotary switches are typically used for position selection.

Common positions include single-pole or multi-pole ON/OFF, 0-1-2 stepped sequences, and changeover or reversal arrangements such as 1-0-2 or direction-reversal layouts, selected to match the control function.

They are used on machine control panels, main switches, changeover panels, and as selector switches for mode and function selection in industrial equipment.

They are mounted through a front-panel cut-out with standard fixing dimensions, and the handle is fitted on the operator side while the switch body and wiring terminals sit behind the panel.

The number of poles and the switching sequence are chosen to match the circuit being controlled, for example two poles for single-phase reversal or four poles for three-phase changeover.
