PDB-AG IP65 Waterproof Junction Box
Every cable run ends somewhere, and that somewhere is usually the weakest point of the circuit. A splice left in open air collects moisture, dust and insects; a joint box bolted to an outside wall takes the full force of driven rain and summer sun; a terminal block in a pump house sits in permanent humidity. The PDB-AG waterproof junction box puts a sealed housing around those joints — a moulded ABS or PC enclosure rated IP65, made in thirty-seven sizes from 65 × 50 × 55 mm up to 380 × 280 × 180 mm.
Nothing inside the box moves, nothing needs adjusting and there is no setting to get wrong. What this waterproof junction box contributes is protection of the housing itself — the material, the gasket and the way the lid closes — plus enough internal room to land conductors properly instead of folding them into a space too small for the job.
What the Enclosure Has to Keep Out
A waterproof junction box fitted outdoors is asked to survive conditions that would destroy an ordinary switch box within a season or two. Ranked by how often they cause trouble, the list is short.
Water, dust and what IP65 actually promises
IP65, under IEC 60529, is a two-digit statement. The first digit means the housing is dust-tight — no ingress at all, not merely “mostly” — and the second means it withstands water projected from a nozzle in any direction. That covers rain on a wall, wash-down spray in a plant room, and the hose someone aims at an outdoor cabinet in summer. It does not cover immersion, and it describes the assembled box with its lid closed and its entries sealed, so the quality of the installation counts as much as the moulding.
Sunlight, cold and chemical attack
Ultraviolet light embrittles cheap plastics; frost makes them brittle in a different way, and the cracking appears at corners and screw bosses first. Industrial sites add oil mist, cleaning agents, salt air and process chemicals on top. Both materials offered for this range are chosen to resist impact, heat, cold and chemical attack, which is why one enclosure design serves a steelworks, a wastewater plant and a marina without being re-engineered for each.
ABS or PC: Two Body Materials, Two Kinds of Duty
The range is moulded in either material, and the choice deserves a moment’s thought because the two behave differently under load and in weather.
Where ABS is enough
ABS is the general-purpose option: tough, dimensionally stable and economical, with good insulation and a clean surface finish. For indoor distribution, communications cabinets, control panels and sheltered service areas it does the whole job, and it is what most buyers take for general stock.
Where polycarbonate earns its keep
Polycarbonate is the harder-wearing of the two. It holds shape across a wider temperature band, resists impact far better at low temperature, and shrugs off ultraviolet exposure for longer. Where a box faces direct sun, a coastal atmosphere or a wash-down regime, the extra cost is usually repaid by not having to replace lids.
Thirty-Seven Sizes and How to Land on One
The series spans thirty-seven moulded footprints, and the spread is deliberate: a small reduction in body size often saves chasing a wall through a finished building, while a step up in depth is what lets a rail and its wiring sit inside without being crushed.
Sizing a waterproof junction box goes more smoothly if you work backwards from the contents. Add up the terminal blocks or rail-mounted parts, allow the bend radius the cable really needs rather than the figure on a datasheet, and leave room for a gland body and the loop of slack behind it. Two options can look equally adequate on a drawing when only one will close comfortably on site. Send us the conductor sizes and the number of ways and we will suggest a footprint with sensible working room, not the smallest one that technically fits.
Fixing It to a Wall, a Board or a DIN Rail
Moulded holes in the base let the box be screwed or nailed straight to a wall, a post or a flat board — the usual fixing outdoors where no cabinet exists. Inside a panel, the same base carries mounting positions for a circuit board or a length of rail, and every box ships with brass M4 inserts, at least two to an enclosure, so a rail or board fastens without tapping into the plastic.
That internal provision is what separates a waterproof junction box from a plain lidded container. A terminal block simply dropped into a box is held by nothing, and a loose connection inside a sealed enclosure is far harder to find than the same fault in an open one.
Where These Waterproof Junction Box Enclosures Are Specified
Buyers of a waterproof junction box are electrical contractors, panel builders and distributors, and they appear wherever a joint has to survive outside a cabinet:
- Exterior lighting circuits and street or garden fittings
- Telecommunications and data cabling in exposed positions
- Fire detection and suppression wiring
- Steelworks, foundries and heavy process plants
- Petrochemical and chemical installations
- Railway, tunnel and signalling infrastructure
- Building services, hotels and commercial premises
- Mining, port and shipboard electrical work
- Wastewater treatment and environmental monitoring equipment
Most of those jobs also need a way of bringing cable into the box, which is where a cable gland and a matching waterproof connector come in. Larger installations usually sit beside a distribution box or another metal enclosure drawn from the enclosures and boxes range.
Outlet Holes, Glands and Keeping the Seal Intact
Boxes are supplied closed, with no entries cut. Openings are made to whatever arrangement the installation needs, and this is where a good enclosure is most easily ruined: a hole cut larger than the gland thread, a gasket twisted during assembly, or a lid tightened unevenly will each defeat a rating the moulding itself meets without difficulty.
Two habits keep the seal on a waterproof junction box honest. Size the hole to the gland thread rather than to the cable, and fit a gland rated at least as highly as the box — pairing an IP65 enclosure with an unsealed entry achieves nothing. Then blank every entry that goes unused, and bring the lid screws down evenly instead of one at a time. For wash-down or coastal work, the stainless glands in our M48 cable gland range are the usual pairing.
Details to Fix Before the Order
An enclosure order is easily got wrong because the box is chosen early in a project while the cables are still being decided. The points that cause returns are predictable:
- Outside dimensions, and whether the figure quoted includes the lid and the wall-mounting flanges
- Material, and whether the location is permanently outdoors or under cover
- Number, size and position of entries, matched to the glands you intend to fit
- Internal content — how many terminals, whether a rail or board goes in, and the space it needs
- Any marking, artwork or documentation your market or your customer expects on the box
Tell us the working conditions and the internal layout and we will confirm material, footprint and entry positions in writing before the boxes are moulded. Figures we can state with confidence for this waterproof junction box series appear in the panel beside this text; anything project-specific is best settled in the enquiry.
Private Label, Packing and Container Loads
The series is produced for OEM and ODM programmes and for ordinary wholesale distribution, so a buyer’s own name on the box is routine production rather than a favour. Where the order is large enough and the destination allows, that can extend to printed or moulded marking, cartons run to your artwork, and paperwork drawn up for the country the goods are going to.
Because the range covers such a spread of sizes, mixed orders are normal: a distributor will take several footprints in one shipment, while a project may need only two or three. Carton quantities differ from one size to the next, so send us the mix you want and we will work out the cheapest way to pack it, consolidating sizes into shared cartons where the quantities allow. We also quote the practical side — manufacturing window, packing method and the branding available at your order volume — alongside the unit figures, so nothing is left to be confirmed after the order is released.

FAQ
What does an IP65 rating mean for this junction box?
IP65 means the assembled enclosure is dust-tight and withstands water projected from a nozzle in any direction, which covers rain, hose-down and wash-down spray. It does not mean the box can be immersed. The rating applies to the box with its lid properly closed and its cable entries sealed, so the glands and the installation matter as much as the moulding.
Should I specify ABS or polycarbonate for my project?
ABS covers indoor and sheltered work at the lower cost: distribution boards, control panels, communications cabinets and covered service areas. Polycarbonate costs more but holds its properties across a wider temperature band, takes impact better in the cold and resists ultraviolet light for longer, so it is the safer choice for permanent outdoor exposure, coastal sites and wash-down areas.
How do I choose the right size of box?
Work backwards from the contents. Add up the terminal blocks or rail-mounted parts, allow the bend radius the cable actually needs, and leave room for the gland body and the loop of slack behind it. Send us the conductor sizes and the number of ways and we will recommend a footprint with sensible working room rather than the smallest one that fits on paper.
Can a DIN rail or circuit board be mounted inside the box?
Yes. The base carries moulded mounting positions for a circuit board or a length of DIN rail, and every enclosure is supplied with at least two M4 brass inserts so the rail or board can be fastened without tapping into the plastic. If you tell us what goes inside, we can confirm the depth that leaves enough room to wire it comfortably.
Can you supply the box with cable entry holes already cut?
The boxes leave the factory closed and openings are made to suit the installation, either by you on site or by us to your drawing. Give us the number, size and position of the entries and the glands you intend to fit, and the boxes can be supplied ready to accept them, which protects the IP65 seal far better than cutting holes after delivery.
What certifications does this range carry?
The manufacturer states that the PDB-AG series is produced to CE and RoHS requirements. If your market or your customer needs the certificates themselves, or documentation drawn up for a particular destination, tell us with the enquiry and we will confirm what can be supplied with the shipment.
Do you supply these enclosures under our own brand?
Yes. The range is produced for OEM and ODM programmes as well as for wholesale distribution, so buyer-branded marking, cartons printed to your artwork and market-specific paperwork are all normal production work. Quantities per carton differ by size, so mixed orders across several footprints are routine.
